GREEN MACHINE
Humans have been burning fossil fuels for energy since the Industrial Revolution. Fossil fuels have became entrenched in every aspect of the economy and our lives, but this has come at a terrible environmental and social cost. "Fossil fuels are like a drug; we're addicted to them, and it's hard to escape that addiction,” says NASA scientist James Hansen. “But we have to find a way to break free and embrace clean, renewable energy sources." Countries agreed to "pursue efforts" to limit global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels under the 2015 Paris agreement. According to the Synthesis Report of the Sixth Assessment Report released by United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in March 2023, this will require cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. The UN calls for the immediate, large-scale adoption of renewable energy like solar and wind, electrified transportation, energy-efficient systems, alternative fuels, and carbon capture and storage technologies across all sectors globally. Yet this is just the latest in a long line of calls to action that governments and industry have failed to act upon. Perhaps it’s time for a new strategy, incorporating the arts. After all, the first step in creating a new future is to imagine it. Enter Green Machine!
